Part 1: Eindhoven - Cluny

Description
The route from Eindhoven to Beaune and Cluny leads along cycling paths in Flanders, to Namur. For over 250 kilometers you cycle through the valley of the Meuse. This is the Lorraine, with its endless coleseed fields. The bloody memories of the First World War lie buried beneath the green and yellow hills around Verdun. However, neither the woods, nor the orchards of Mirabelle plum trees, bring this to mind.

There are two options after Toul. The route that runs furthest to the east leads South through wooded areas, along towpaths and biking paths. You won't go wanting for places to stay, as there are many campsites and gîtes, and a few hotels, along the way. This route has the largest number of car-free kilometres. The route that runs more toward the west is almost 50 kilometres shorter. It has fewer car-free kilometres than the eastern option, but there are still nearly 150 kilometres of car-free roads. After Pontailler on the Saone River, where the two options come together, the route leads directly to Beaune, in the heart of Burgundy. South of Beaune, a network of cycling paths takes you through exquisite vineyards. From Chagny to Cluny (the end of Part 1 of the route), you can cycle La Voie Verte, the green road, which takes you through the landscape of Southern Burgundy along 44 kilometres of old railway line.

The total distance from Eindhoven to Beaune is roughly 750 kilometres; to Cluny is an additional 80 kilometres. About 450 kilometres along this route are car-free, and the rest of the roads have little traffic. The alternative and shorter selected route through the Ardennes is not strenuous, except for a few hills at the beginning. Because of the large number of car-free kilometres, this route is suitable for cycling with children.
